To make starting a 4000 series tractor easier in cold weather put the range selector in gear and turn the key to the start position and hold it there for 5 seconds or so. The glow plugs only come on when the key is in the start position and the safety interlock will keep the engine from cranking. You could use the PTO switch too.

Not as bad a fix price-wise as I had expected, but still a nuisance!! So why do modern engines still run glow plugs at all? I oh'd the 686 this spring, and it fires up perfect even at freezing, so clearly the technology to build a diesel that starts without glow plugs has been available since the 70's. Do the v-8's just not work as efficiently?

My Kubota is set up so that the glow plugs are on when the ignition key is in the start position, but the starter won't turn over until the clutch is depressed. Normally I hold the key in the start position for about 10 seconds then push in the clutch to start the engine. When the key is released that turns off the glow plugs.

First, the adapter they say works for the 7.3 Navistar engine bottoms out on the shoulder in the glow plug hole in my 1990 engine; the threads won't engage. Someone on another forum said that another adapter in the kit would work since it had the same 10mm x 1.00 thread. Half of it is still in the glow plug hole.
